HKEPC Background
The Hong Kong Economic Policy Challenge (HKEPC) aims to engage university students in addressing real-world economic challenges through innovative policy proposals. By fostering collaboration between academia and industry, the competition encourages participants to analyze critical issues, develop feasible solutions, and connect with professionals. The event will also serve as a platform for students to showcase their problem-solving skills and promote meaningful discussions on Hong Kong’s economic future.

The HKEPC aspires to promote friendly competition, life-long practical learning, and cooperation through the following goals:
1. For Hong Kong university students to develop a stronger understanding of economic conditions in Hong Kong through research and proposal development.
2. To apply economic theories learned both in and outside the classroom in a practical manner for the benefit of Hong Kong and its citizens.
3. Promote cooperation and collaboration between university students, academia, industry professionals, and governmental entities.
4. Establish a basis where Hong Kong university students can share and develop their economic plans through competition.
HISTORY
HKEPC has been co-organised bi-annually by the HKUST Department of Economics and the Center for Economic Policy (CEP) since 2021. It is a case competition that aims to bridge the gap between economic theory and practicality, giving tertiary students a purpose to channel what they learn in the classroom to solve Hong Kong’s economic issues. In 2021, HKEPC focused on Hong Kong’s housing crisis, and in 2023, we tackled Hong Kong’s labor force crisis.
